Here’s what you’ll find in today’s email:
Perspective
How to be a good ancestor
Imagine the next seven generations
A 10,000-year clock
Ain’ even been planted
Programming note: This newsletter is going on summer break. I’ll be OOO the week of 7/26, then back at work but making space for play and planning during August. I’ll see you in September.
1. Perspective
2. How to be a good ancestor
If you’re working for intergenerational causes, I recommend this Vox piece on how to be a good ancestor. It’s full of ideas and examples, including ethical arguments, advocacy paths, and decision frameworks like Future Design, the Seventh-Generation Principle, and (the wonky) Strong Longtermism.
3. Imagine the next seven generations
Mohawk artist Skawennati emphasizes the power of envisioning a thriving future for Indigenous peoples, including time travel art that spans 1,000 years.
4. A 10,000-year clock
Did you know that a 10,000-year clock is currently under construction by the Long Now Foundation? It sits inside a mountain in western Texas, on land owned by (you guessed it) Jeff Bezos. One tick per year, one cuckoo per millennium.
5. Ain’ even been planted

Treasure chest
I bet you find a gem ➔ happy bday, AJ! | organizers share, what’s being said but remains unheard? | the repressive politics of emotional intelligence | make work more fun: ditch the crap | the pandemic did not affect mental health the way you think | the best animal live streams from around the world | choose your date, choose your destiny | until I’m back, keep up the good lovin’👇🏼
Have a great weekend and month! I’ll see you again soon.
