1. The sanctuaries we truly need
I appreciated this invitation from Antiracism Daily to avoid spiritual bypassing in self-care, wellness, and religion. The big idea is that spiritual practices and communities should not become places to hide out. Rather, they should support resilience, connection, and transformation through honest encounters. This requires that we reckon with harm and privilege, both in our most precious spaces and in ourselves. It will also require a good deal of work to create the sanctuaries we truly need. To everyone who is currently in-process with this: fortitude, courage, and mad respect.
2. Aerobics and Calm and Peloton
There have been several good analyses of wellness trends in circulation this week:
Aerobics promised women “wellness.” What went wrong?
Inside the meteoric, chilled-out, totally paradoxical rise of Calm.
Towards a unified theory of Peloton.
3. How to start a movement
Anyone else love Dancing Guy? I recently discovered that he was given the TED treatment.1 The focus of the talk is the importance of first followers.
When you find a lone nut doing something great, have the guts to be the first one to stand up and join in.
—Derek Sivers
P.S. Strictly for vibes, I still prefer the original video. (It starts to escalate around 1:45.)
4. In the Heights, cont…
Last week I shared how much the kids and I enjoyed In the Heights. This week, I want to lift up discourse around colorism in the film’s casting, how this reflects a widespread problem in Hollywood, and co-creator Lin-Manuel Miranda’s response.
Walk and talks
💥Last week’s walk and talks went well. So well, in fact, that I’m extending the offer through Labor Day to both local and remote clients.💥
I will hold these sessions at 7:30am Eastern on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In-person clients depart from Charlottesville High School; phone clients depart from anywhere. This is a great opportunity for inexpensive coaching ($60 for 45 min).
